Ten In A Row
Place 10 balls on the front line of the goal area box, evenly spread apart. Time as each player kicks each ball in succession, until all 10 have been shot. Add 1 second for any shots that missed the goal. Use this at the end of each practice and keep track of each player's times. Stress to your players that progress (getting faster and more accurate) and consistency is most important. As the season goes on each player should be able to see that he/she is getting faster and more accurate. My players beg to play this game at the end of each practice. 12 U10 players should take near 15 minutes to do (if you have players that already took their turn help with setting up the next player). This exercise should help each player execute kicks and shots quickly, with increasing accuracy.
Shooting Hoolahoops
Attach hoolahoops to the top corners of a goal, then have players practice shooting the ball through the hoops from various spots around the penalty box .This will make players shoot the ball away from keeper and into the top corners, similar to targets on a hockey net.
8 V. 8 - 6 GOALS
The Game
2 teams of 8. Each team defends their 3 goals, and tries to score in the opponents 3 goals. Team with most goals wins.
Coaching Points
Attack:
Vision, recognizing where pressure is coming from.
Posession / penetreation decisions.
Switching the point of attack.
Defense:
Pressure , cover, balance.
Defending zonally since the 3 goals force a team to defend 'numbers down'.
Immediate counter attack when ball is won.
Try These Variations
Dribble through the goals instead of passing. (Make goals 10 yds.wide)
Goals must come off a 'one touch'
Limit attackers to '2 touches'
8 V 8 TO GOAL
The Game
Two teams playing 8v. 8 in the middle third of the field as marked. The team in posession of the ball tries to make a pass over the cones to a teammate that is coming out of the middle third. The passed ball must proceed the player running in. Defenders can not 'track-back' to defend. Once in, the attacker can play one on one with the keeper. Play is then started in the opposite direction with the keeper playing the ball into the middle third to a teammate.
Coaching Points
Attack: Good posession / penetration decisions.
Playing the ball away from pressure in order to complete a 'good pass' into the final third.
Combination play in order to get behind the defense.
Quality of final service so that it does not go through to the keeper.
Defense:
Quality pressure on the ball.
2.Group effort to 'keep the ball in front of us'
3.Good compactness.
Try These Variations
Shooter must shoot first time, or limit the number of touches he may have.
If penetrating ball is a wide ball, another attacker may advance to receive a cross.
Allow 2 attackers and one defender in to the final third.
8 v 8 Keep Away
The Game
Two teams of 8 play ~keep-away~ in the middle zone as marked. If the defending team wins the ball, they immediately try to posess it.
Coaching Points
Attack:
Moving with and without the ball.
Angles of support.
Team 'Balance.
Vision.
Defense:
Immediate pressure when the ball is turned over.
Cover.
Making play predictable.
Compacting space.
Try These Variations
Limit attacking players to '2 touch'
Create a sequence where if an attacker takes more than 2 touches, the next touch must be a 'i touch'
After every fourth touch the area of play must be shifted elsewhere.
